South Asia’s Regional Integration: Vision and Reality
South Asia’s Regional Integration: Vision and Reality
By AC GRC
The vision of a united and economically integrated South Asia has long inspired policymakers and thinkers across the region. With shared history, culture, and geography, the countries of South Asia have immense potential to collaborate for prosperity. Yet, the reality of regional integration remains far from its promise.
Despite frameworks like SAARC and BIMSTEC, political tensions, trade barriers, and infrastructural limitations have slowed progress toward a truly connected region. In contrast, other regional blocs across the world have advanced more swiftly toward economic and institutional cooperation.
At AC GRC, we examine the structural and political challenges that shape South Asia’s integration journey—and explore how renewed diplomacy, connectivity, and trust-building could transform the region’s future.
🔹 Key Insights:
-
Intra-regional trade accounts for less than 5% of South Asia’s total trade—one of the lowest globally.
-
Political mistrust and security concerns remain key impediments to regional cooperation.
-
Enhanced connectivity through energy corridors, transport links, and digital networks could boost integration.
-
Regional institutions need revitalization to promote dialogue and inclusivity.
-
People-to-people exchange and cross-border investments can build shared prosperity.
The dream of South Asian regional integration is not beyond reach—it requires political will, economic vision, and collaborative leadership to turn potential into progress.
📘 AC GRC continues to study regional cooperation, trade frameworks, and development models that can help shape a more integrated and stable South Asia.
